Report and Video Review:
Punished for Neglected Insurance Premium
As roaduser you are in permanent danger either to suffer corporal injury or property damage or to cause it to others. Therefore in most
countries as car user you are obliged to have a third-party insurance, and if not, it is very much advisable to have one. In poor countries
a damage may cost less, but compared with the small income of people it may be even more serious as in our region. There is no health insurance and
you have to pay yourself to restore physical integrity which is so important to survive. Material damage seems to be less harmful. Skilled
manual workers are repairing nearly everything more or less well, but this depends again on how much you are able to pay. On african roads
you will find many rotten vehicles which is enlarging the danger of accidents. Additionally general daily life takes place in the streets:
street vendors, pedestrians, cyclists, motos and cars share the narrow space especially in the city.
The videoclip below will give you an example:
During a visit to my girlfriend I noticed that the third-party insurance of her car had expired since more than two months (according to the
plaque on the windscreen). She had neglected to pay the premium either to save money or out of carelessness. I informed her how important it
was to have a valid insurance regardless of other consequences by the police authorities. Though I knew that she was a good driver (I would
never dare to ride a car in Africa), an accident might happen easily.
I remember an incident which I witnessed as her front-seat passenger when she cut the right of way of a cyclist who turned upside down.
Fortunately this caused no injury or damage, but instead of feeling sorry she insulted the poor man of not taking care enough. The stronger
is dominating, that's the attitude in african traffic!
In consequence of her omission I gave her a good spanking to make her remember never to neglect important payments in future. She had learned the
lesson and promised never to commit a failing like that again.
I videotaped this ordeal and it is available upon request on page Videos 2.
